Velvet Underground & Nico
The Strokes is just the latest in a long line of bands that owe a huge debt to Lou Reed and the Velvets. Like their mentor Andy Warhol, they twist common pop icons, in this case music, into warped, but still distinguishable, shapes. "There She Goes Again" comes on like a song about a crush before it turns into a first-person look at a pimp-whore relationship. The repetitive hook-of-a-riff in "Heroin" is, well, addictive. |
