Speaking In Tongues David Byrne brings a cubist sensibility to pop music, absorbing everyday images and influences, then reflecting them back through a fractured lense. The band is at its best when the predominant influence is funk, both here and on Fear of Music. I credit drummer Chris Franz and bassist Tina Weymouth (check out The Tom Tom Club sometime) for the ability to overcome the white-men-can't-funk stigma. That, and a stellar cast of sidemen brought in for this project, including Bernie Worrell. Sure, the crank would complain that the Heads are no George Clinton, but who is? |
