Hollywood Town Hall (contributed

Tom Wareham) The Jayhawks Hollywood Town Hall took the band to a new high after their self-titled debut and Blue Earth, both decent records themselves. On the front end of the alt.country movement, this record leans toward the pop side, with great harmonizing between Mark Olson and Gary Louris. These songs are wonderful tales of people, places, and moments that are worth getting to know, worth exploring. That in a sense is how I was introduced to the Jayhawks. Up until college, John didn't care much for me, I was just his little pest brother. I used to listen to his records when he wasn't home and I was always afraid that he'd catch me when he came home and give me hell. That's how he used to be in those days. Then, for some reason, he started inviting me to go out to shows with him and his friends. We'd mainly go to the Uptown or 400 Bar to see either Gear Daddies or the Jayhawks. In those days I didn't have much money, but this didn't seem to matter to John and his friends, they'd buy me a beer anyways. This feeling of acceptance, mainly by John, has always meant a lot to me and I've never looked at John as the bullying, mean older brother again. |
