Dusty In Memphis
Even as I write this I find it hard to believe I'm admitting that WCCO-AM had an influence on my musical tastes. I certainly don't think of it as a music station now, and even when I think back to when they did play music, the songs felt like breaks to allow the station's personalities an opportunity to head to the bathroom (which they couldn't do as often as you'd think during the commercials - often as not they were done live, often indistinguishable from the rest of the chatter.) So, in the dozen years before I learned my parents radio could tune in something besides WCCO, I grew up on a steady diet of popular music chosen mostly to not offend. But it wasn't always as bland as you might think. I know that's where I first heard Otis Redding singing "Dock of the Bay," and was introduced through Glen Campbell to Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Lineman") and John Hartford ("Gentle On My Mind".) Likewise, that's where I heard "Son of a Preacher Man", so Dusty's here in honor of that era.
